Universal Cranes began as a family crane hire business in 1993. While Universal Cranes has grown to become a national crane hire company, local families still own and operate our branches throughout Queensland and New South Wales. We are proud of all the unique stories that make up the history of our company.

ALBERT SMITH

GROUP MANAGING DIRECTOR

Albert has over 30 years of experience in the crane and construction industry. As a passionate engineer, entrepreneur and crane enthusiast, Albert led the rapid expansion of Universal Cranes from a small pick and carry hire business to a leading national crane company. Albert’s vision has always been to combine the power of a national crane hire company with the passion and service levels of a family business. He has worked closely with the local shareholders of the Universal Cranes branches in the establishment of their businesses, and continues to provide ongoing mentoring and support. Albert is a dynamic leader and talented engineer who leads his national Universal Cranes team to provide innovative lift engineering and crane hire solutions.

OLIVER MARTIN

GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

A Chartered Accountant by trade with over 20 years’ experience, Oliver was appointed the Group Chief Executive Officer of Smithbridge Group, including Universal Cranes and sister companies Smithbridge Guam and Auckland Cranes in May 2020. Oliver has led the financial management of the Group since 2010 in the role of Chief Financial Officer and later Chief Operations Officer. As Group CEO Ollie is responsible for the financial and operational performance of the group, leading the business to achieve growth and sustainability in revenue and profit, driving operational efficiency, and role modelling the leadership behaviours to maintain a high performing, engaged culture. With over 10 years’ in the Smithbridge Group Oliver is well positioned to be a key leader to all facets of the group.

DASHELLE BAILEY

GROUP MANAGER, STRATEGY & GROWTH

Dashelle has over 10 years’ experience in strategy and growth, specialising in strategic planning, corporate communications, opportunity pipeline management, and business improvement. Dashelle co-founded a business-to-business strategy and communications agency with a niche in the resources and construction sector. In 2019 Dashelle joined the Smithbridge Group full time, managing business improvement, marketing, and commercial growth strategies to contribute to achieving sustainable profitability for the Group. As part of a long-term succession strategy, Dashelle has been an Advisory Board Member since 2015 for Smithbridge Group. She was a nominated as a Non-Executive Director for Auckland Cranes in December 2017 until an ownership restructure saw this board absorbed into the Smithbridge Group Advisory Board.

SHANE YOUNG

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

A Certified Practising Accountant with 15 years’ experience, Shane joined Smithbridge Group in March 2018 as Group Reporting Manager and quickly progressed to Group Financial Controller. Now, in his role as CFO, Shane brings a background in the financial management of labour intensive operations with a passion for fostering successful teams. With a focus on supporting the operational business with data-driven reporting, and efficient and user friendly technology, Shane is leading the transformation of Smithbridge Group’s financial management to support the ongoing governance journey.

KEVIN BALL

GROUP MANAGER, SAFETY & SYSTEMS

With 20 years’ experience implementing operational and strategic risk management frameworks in the resources and construction sectors, Kevin brings a systematic approach to identifying and managing risk in complex businesses.  As a key member of the Leadership Group and working within diverse geographical and operational environments, Kevin’s demonstrated ability to leverage technology in the innovative design, development and integration of systems and processes, provides cohesive business solutions to balance current needs, future growth and promote a positive learning culture. Kevin has served as a Committee Member for Standards Australia for nearly 20 years, including the role of Chairman on the ME-025 Lifting Tackle Committee and Member of ME-005 Cranes Committee

MELISSA KAVANAGH

GROUP MANAGER, PEOPLE & CULTURE

Melissa Kavanagh is a highly motivated and results-driven People and Culture Manager with a strong passion for driving growth and maximising the effectiveness of an organisation’s investment in its people. Mel has a proven track record of successfully leading cross-functional teams in developing and executing integrated People and Culture strategies and communication plans. She has worked for national and international brands including Boeing, Schweppes, Crown Resort and Steel Mains. In her role as Group Manager for People and Culture she is responsible for driving the people agenda by leading cultural change initiatives, creating a high performance environment with a focus on employee well being. Mel provides strategic leadership and support to each Business Unit while implementing guidelines, policies, tools, and systems across the broader Smithbridge Group.

SAM PAAKKI

GROUP MANAGER, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Sam Paakki is the Group Manager of Information Technology at Smithbridge Group, directing strategic IT development, deployment, and security. With over 25 years of experience in IT management and cybersecurity, he leads critical ICT modernization and cloud adoption efforts. Since his start in October 2023, Sam has been key to the Connected Crew Program, significantly boosting operational efficiency and safety. His previous roles at Seymour Whyte Constructions and Downer Group involved managing large IT projects that enhanced both IT and business operations. Sam holds a Bachelor of Information Technology from the University of Queensland and a Master of Information Technology and an MBA from Queensland University of Technology (QUT). He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders ANZ, recognized for his leadership in IT management.

Sam’s strategic vision and leadership ensure Smithbridge Group remains at the forefront of technological innovation, improving IT system usability, adoption, and operational excellence, thus maximizing the return on IT investments.

MARK HAPPER

General Manager

Mark Happer returned to Universal Cranes in the General Manager role in 2017 after the completion of Smithbridge Australia contracts. Mark was the Operations Manager of Smithbridge Australia and has been a key member of the Smithbridge Group of companies for over 20 years. Prior to Mark’s appointment as Operations Manager, he successfully grew, the wholly owned subsidiary Universal Cranes Pty Ltd, to one of Australia’s largest privately owned crane hire companies as General Manager.

Mark also brings years of site and project management experience to this role from previous experience on a number of historical Smithbridge projects includ- ing the Otira Viaduct and Route PJK Expressway in New Zealand. Mark further refined his management skills as General Manager of Universal Cranes. Mark was responsible for managing and coordinating over 100 staff, growing the business and establishing additional branches.

Mark was responsible for the overseeing all projects and ensuring the successful delivery of project work. He was also responsible for the coordination of resources and personnel across the company’s projects.

Ben Smith

National Operations Manager

Ben Smith has been working with Universal Cranes since 2020 and is currently the National Operations Manager. Ben is known for exceptional leadership skills, comprehensive knowledge of lift engineering and a strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance. Ben has a passion for optimizing operations, enhancing customer satisfaction, and driving business growth through innovative solutions and effective team management. Adept at navigating complex challenges and delivering outstanding results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Ben possesses a comprehensive understanding of the construction industry, underpinned by his registration as an engineer and experience in design engineering, project management and contract administration across resource, industrial, and infrastructure projects.

In addition to his role at Universal Cranes, Ben has been a member of the Smithbridge Group Advisory Board since 2016. In this capacity, he contributes to the organization’s strategic vision and decision-making processes, leveraging his industry knowledge and leadership experience to guide long-term planning and innovation. Ben’s advisory role has further honed his ability to align operational strategies with overarching business goals, ensuring sustained growth and success for the company.

Patrick Silver

National Project and Heavy Lift Manager

Patrick Silver’s career in the construction and heavy lifting industry spans over a decade, characterized by increasing responsibilities and diverse project experiences.

Patrick began his construction career in site-based roles for various contractors, most notably as a site engineer during the construction of the Daunia and Caval Ridge coal mines in Central Queensland.

In 2014, Patrick joined Smithbridge, where he contributed to significant projects such as Star Mountain Plaza in Papua New Guinea and the Nambucca and Stingray Creek Bridges in New South Wales.
In 2017, Patrick transitioned to Universal Cranes, where he supported all areas of the business in his role as Lift Engineer and subsequently as Sales and Engineering Manager.

For the past three years, Patrick has led the Projects and Heavy Lift branch at Universal Cranes. In this position, he and his team have provided critical support to numerous clients by developing and implementing heavy lift solutions for a wide range of projects.

Matthew Moller

Brisbane Branch Manager

Matthew Moller began working at Universal Cranes Brisbane Branch in July 2007. Initially, he was part of the crane crew, operating a Franna for five years. He then advanced to operating slew cranes for the next seven years.

In 2019, Matt transitioned into an office role as a crane & Sales supervisor, a position he held for a year. In November of 2021, Matt was promoted to Operations Manager for the Brisbane branch.

In January 2024, Matt became the Branch Manager of Universal Cranes Brisbane Branch.

Stuart Hamel

Ballina Branch Manager

After 10 years in the electrical reticulation industry in New Zealand, Stuart first joined the Smithbridge Group of companies in 1998. Since then, he has worked in several positions within the company in New Zealand, Guam, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and Australia. These have been hands-on, supervisory and managerial roles in Contracting, Equipment Logistics, Fabrication Workshop, HSE, Compliance, Precast Concrete and Wind Farming. Stuart has been responsible for managing large projects and is experienced in leading multicultural teams of up to 100 staff. Industry experience and an understanding of customer expectations ensures our Northern NSW customers will receive the best possible service from Stuart and the Ballina team.

Adam Bauer

Central Queensland Manager

Adam has worked in the construction industry for the past 25 years. He has worked in various roles starting out as an apprentice Diesel Fitter. Once trade level was reached Adam moved into the operation of cranes and rigging joining Universal Cranes Brisbane in 2003 working with a variety of Franna’s, Hydraulic Slew Cranes and Crawler Cranes. 2006 saw him move to Ballina helping establish the branch working in all areas of operations and planning of general crane hire.

2012 brought Adam back to the Brisbane branch at an operational level when in 2014 he move into his current position as Branch Manager of Central Queensland(Gladstone and Rockhampton branches). Responsible for managing sales and operational teams, planning, and delivering on general crane hire jobs, preparing of lift studies. He has a high level of understanding of the industry and our organisation.

Clay Marshall

Roma Branch Manager

I started at Universal Cranes in 2006, initially working in the paint shop for a very short time before moving into various roles, including dogging and crane operating. Over time, I advanced my skills by acquiring additional tickets and licenses, gaining greater experience and taking on new challenges.

I’ve worked on a range of projects, from general hire and shutdown work to major projects throughout the Brisbane area. This experience has also provided opportunities to work at different Universal Cranes branches. Notably, I became the Branch Manager of the Roma Universal Cranes Branch, where I have been for the past four years and have learned a great deal from this experience.

John Hanna

Sunshine Managing Director

John’s career with Smithbridge Group began in New Zealand, where he served as a construction supervisor. His exceptional leadership and organizational skills led to his relocation to Guam, where he continued to excel and was promoted to Plant Manager in 2003.

In 2005, John and Margot established Universal Cranes Sunshine Coast and John took on the role of Managing Director. Under his guidance, the company has thrived, fostering a positive, cooperative, and safety-conscious environment. John and Margot are also deeply involved in the Sunshine Coast community, where they are respected for their contributions to local causes. Universal Cranes Sunshine Coast continues to stand out as the premier crane company in the region

Gordon Willlocks

North QLD Managing Director

Gordon Willocks started work for John Smith Contractors (Group Managing Director Albert Smith’s father) in New Zealand as a teenager and has been part of the Universal Cranes family from the very beginning. Gordon has experience in wharf, bridge and foundations construction.

He spent 11 years in Guam working as Operations Manager for Universal Cranes sister company Smithbridge. Gordon moved to Brisbane with his family in 2004, taking up the post of Operations Manager for the flagship Universal Cranes Brisbane operations. An energetic and engaging leader, Gordon again relocated to North Queensland as the owner and operator of the Universal Cranes Townsville branch. Gordon manages an industry-leading crane hire business in North Queensland, continuing to grow in a challenging economic environment.
